My mom and I know nothing about the rules of checks. Okay, my mom needs to give $3,000 to the workers tomorrow before they leave. She's signed the back of a $2,000 check from my grandmother and written a check out for cash for $1,000. Tomorrow I'm supposed to go in and get the money from the bank.

My question is: all she needs to do is sign the back of the check from my grandmother, right? She doesn't need to put her account number on the back, right? And even though I'm not her, as long as I have the checks and whatnot, they'll give me the money, right?

The bank's a BB&T, if that matters.

*sighs* I hate not knowing what the hell I'm doing.

O_O for a check that big, they will probably require your mom to be there with I.D. unless they know you, then maybe it'd be different... that's my opinion on the subject.

Well, it's a small town so someone'd know me. I'm bringing a signed letter giving me permission to accept the $3,000 and my mom's work number to call her, just in case. Hopefully that'll be enough.

That's what I keep trying to tell my mom, but she won't have any of it. I'm bringing a letter of signed permission and my mother's work number for them to call her. Hopefully that'll work. Just-- argh. Mom just won't listen. So frustrating.

In the past, I've had my mom sign a check and then write "Pay to the order of " under it. Then when I deposited the check, I signed it myself under that line. It wasn't for something quite so large, though. *shrug* I normally deposit checks via ATM, so they might be more hesitant if you're going for cash.

Ditto. Depositing, banks don't really care. Cashing in, especially larger amounts, person check addressed to should be there to receive it in person with ID. You might try having her sign a note explicitly authorizing you to get the cash, but that might not be enough...
