Summary:

Dick Simmons has a multi-step plan. Move to Blood Gulch, become a superhero, assume a civilian identity, and save the day with the other heroes of the city. He didn't count on his fellow superheroes being so weird, the villains even weirder, and getting stuck with the most annoying coworker in the universe at his civilian job. But there are secrets and danger in the city, tensions boiling under the surface, and Simmons may be in over his head.

Well, I started this fic in a very different world and as a very different person-- April 2019 and past me was in a toxic workplace, living with roommates she wasn't fond of, and also thought she was cis-- and now it's complete!

It's been a long, weird road, involving a lot of real life shenanigans, but I'm so happy with the final result and so happy to finish this long WIP. And so happy to be in a much better place in my personal life as well! I'm a homeowner, I work at a branch with decent coworkers and out as nonbinary to pretty much everyone except my family, and I have my wonderful girls, Hilda and Zelda, who bring me joy every day.

Red vs Blue: Zero Ep 2: Recovery

  • Carolina just instantly going into fight mode upon waking up is so good but also hurts a little! I just want her and Wash to have a less fraught time. Also the giant over-sized cast is an amazing visual gag, I approve.
  • Carolina immediately going into leader mode is SO GOOD. Very great callback to her during her Freelancer days as well as being with the Reds and Blues. God, the Reds and Blues totally helped prepare her for the Shatter Squad, huh. Also her putting her feet up on her desk is definitely someone like Grif rubbing off on her, because she wouldn't have done that in her Freelancer days.
  • Axel: a dad and a Boy Scout. West is the father figure -- and East's actual father? Carolina might've said "A bit on the nose," but also like...she must have some feelings about a father and daughter working together. That is definitely interesting. I mean, I would also have daddy issues if my dad was in charge of my squad, just saying. But it does explain a little of her determination to be better than One, who is headstrong and needs to learn how to be a team player. Raymond compared to Guy Fieri is fun, and I'm intrigued how they'll all work together as a squad.
  • I LOVE Tiny. I want to see more of her. Enormous genius mechanic who likes to high-five and is super cheerful? She's great. Also I see that remark about Warthogs being ancient. I see it.
  • Okay, if any of the crew dies, it's going to be Axel. A dad who just wants to retire and is obsessed with his lawnmower?
  • Carolina being a mentor to One is giving me a lot of feelings. Carolina has done the whole loner thing! She knows you need a team! She knows One needs a team! I am here for this relationship.
  • Hmm, so East had some sort of illness as a kid, and West gave her up for some genetic alteration or testing? I don't know Halo really well, but I'm sure stuff like that was happening during the war. But whatever it did saved her but has some side effects? Interesting.
  • One's family being a long line of soldiers KIA really works as a backstory for me. And also that means we've got TWO father-daughter relationships on this squad which is both amazing and makes me worried. I am really loving Axel though. He saw One, went "Is anyone going to adopt her?" and didn't wait for an answer.
  • I am again really liking the fight scenes. It's a nice juxtaposition of seeing the bad guys working together like a well-oiled machine while Shatter Squad is still, well, a little scattered.
  • This really was supposed to be low key, a medium risk assignment for Wash and Carolina. :( Oops.
  • Oh god, One calling Carolina grandma and Carolina IMMEDIATELY wiping the floor with her is great. Love it. And then of course ending with her about to kick One and East's asses because she's Carolina.
  • I am excited for the rest of the season, though I hope we get some mention of the Reds and Blues, even if it's just Carolina saying someone in Shatter Squad would get along with one of them.
cinaed: This fic was supposed to be short (Default)
Going to be posting my thoughts on the newest season of RvB! For some reason the cut tag isn't working for me, so I'm just going to post the first episode reaction here right now.

Red vs Blue: Zero Ep 1: Viper

  • Really enjoying the music already just for the introduction.
  • Re: Agent Washington, "they fixed that a long time ago using robotics and old kitchen appliances," I'm not sure how I feel about Wash's injuries being completely fixed, but also great shoutout to Grif and Simmons cyborg fun and Sarge being saved by CPR. But also I really wonder where this is in the RvB timeline. Has it been a couple months? Years? Maybe we'll find out.
  • I was joking with some friends that the other Reds and Blues are on vacation (Grif, Simmons, and Kai are visiting Hawaii, Sarge took Lopez home to meet his mom, Doc and Donut are doing a galactic road trip, and Tucker and Caboose are visiting Junior) but this is Wash and Carolina's idea of vacation, a supposedly low-key security mission. That's my story and I'm sticking to it until otherwise contradicted by canon.
  • I really like the fight scenes so far! They feel very fluid and easy to follow, at least for me.
  • Also I am kind of obsessed with the female villain's weapon. A knife that can like teleport you??? That is so cool. (Imagine if Tucker could do that with his sword. Or Simmons got a hold of one.) It's just a neat concept, and I cannot wait to see more fight scenes with it included.
  • CAROLINA! I love her so much. "A fan? Do you want an autograph or something?" Love her and Wash working as a unit.
  • Villain: "Don't get distracted." No, get distracted, love that the female villain is a fangirl of Carolina because who wouldn't be.
  • I really like the introduction to the new characters. They're called the Shatter Squad? It gave us their personalities right off the bad, with a rookie and a race. Looking forward to learning more about them! Love One versus East's rivalry, Axel's long-suffering attitude because he knows One is going to get too competitive, and the poor newbie (Raymond, I think?) puking in his helmet.
  • I will admit, I am not sure about Wash in peril yet again. I love Wash, but I am a bit tired of him being constantly hurt or in danger, you know? But I am willing to see where it goes, and I do like the concept of Carolina raising hell to get him back from these guys.
  • "Where's the temple?" "He knows that the alien artifacts are keys to the temples that hold the ultimate power!" Hm, so is this like Forerunner stuff or whatever, like the stuff they found on Chorus? Or stuff like Tucker and Locus' swords? Will be interesting to see where they're going with this, because Chorus' temples did have some very powerful stuff going on.
cinaed: Shit that should've been canon (Shit That Should've Been Canon)
Slowly making my way through my DVD collection of Red vs Blue!

  • "You can't die! I'm bored!" Donut is so ruthless in the earlier seasons and I love it.
  • We really needed more Tex and Sheila girltime, talking about gender inequality and workplace harassment.
  • Simmons actually calling himself Simmons 2.0 manages to be both hilarious and sad.
  • Yes, Sarge and Caboose team up! Season 3 has some of my favorite odd couples, and Sarge and Caboose is one of my favorites. Sarge being furious that Doc has a higher body count than he does, Caboose's dedication to nap time.
  • I love Caboose's moral boost! He's great at compliments even if Sarge doesn't appreciate them.
  • I know these zealots were like a mostly one-off joke, but also like...they could be a creepy potential experiment in making soldiers that can't die, which I wouldn't put past anyone in the Halo universe.
  • I love the blame game of who came up with the plan that ended up with everyone scattered across the galaxy. Sarge: "My only choice is to blame Grif, for coming up with such a flawed plan. Stupid, stupid Grif." Grif: "I should have never listened to Donut's stupid fucking plan."
  • Church and Grif in jail is one of my all-time favorite things.
  • Simmons is such a tech savvy guy, reworking the teleporters to make them communication devices as well! He just wants some love and support.
  • Caboose getting angry. I mean, who wouldn't get angry at kittens with spikes that you couldn't cuddle?
  • "Simmons, you get an F in efficiency. But I have to give you an A+ in dramatic timing."
  • I do love O'Malley and Doc's dynamic. The Do Not Call list!
  • I love Tex's half-truths about the Freelancers.
  • Also love Sarge calling Caboose a little rascal and Simmons just seething with jealousy. And he's also jealous about Donut!
  • Church: There's no "I" in team, Grif.
Grif: Yeah, there's no "U" either. So I guess if I'm not on the team, and you're not on the team, nobody's on the God damn team. The team sucks!
  • I may or may not quote that to myself on a weekly basis.
  • Again, just Church and Grif together in that prison cell is sheer perfection. As is Church going "Wait, the people outside sound like they're winning, that can't be our teams."
  • Tucker likes Sheila so much! And she packed them food! Well, the AI equivalent of food, but it's the thought that counts! Just the sheer affection in Tucker's voice as he promises her they'll be back gave me emotions.
  • And another good moment of Simmons being the one to suggest they track down Grif, because no one else was going to.
  • In retrospect, Grif has clearly watched some prison pornos. Like... Buddy.
  • Wyoming calling Tex Allison has so many interesting implications.
  • Simmons re-engineers stuff, Sarge makes a weather control device. Where's the AU where Sarge is a mad scientist.
  • Simmons asking Grif if he's okay after prison. Just loving the slow build of friendship between them.
  • Also big parallels of Church's "Misery loves company" and his willingness to let the bomb blow them all up together to later seasons stuff.
  • I still love that everyone's go-to explanation for stuff is "time travel."
  • Donut is too thin-skinned about criticism for his play. He'd never survive on Broadway, lol. But I love everything about the time travel show.
  • How is Tucker the smartest person in this group? But also Tucker being so worried about Church. I am having a lot of Tucker feelings this season.
  • I love Grif's devotion to cheesy disaster movies.
  • Caboose: Look what I found.
    Donut: I found it!
Caboose: Look at what I took credit for finding.
  • Poor Donut! A grenade to the head and now his hand got chopped up.
  • Grif: Hey, what're you doing?
Simmons: What does it look like I'm doing, I'm getting in the jeep.
Grif: What're we, on a date? Get in the back.
    Simmons: Oh you're so insecure.
  • I would've watched an entire season of Doc and O'Malley and Lopez's Lair Improvements. And when Doc mentions a real estate agent all I can think of is an AU where Doc meets Kai because she's running her business on the side while in the military. But also Doc's motivational powers in the living room, O'Malley's belief that the cat won't hang on until Friday, it's great.
  • The iconic jeep conversation is still good now as it was back then. Re-enacting Dukes of Hazzard! "I can tell you what we weren't doing."
  • Grif's mind immediately going to gay stuff as a favor from Tex. Between this and his prison conversation with Church, someone is protesting way too much.
  • Sarge's plans are so amazingly terrible. I love them.
  • Grif getting choked up over hating Blue Team and Tucker and missing the days where they all just stood around and talked a lot.
  • Tex sounding genuinely concerned when Tucker falls into the hall. Luckily he gets a cool sword out of it!
  • Tex's conversation with Simmons about shooting Lopez's head is a great example of an eloquent helmet look. Tex doesn't even say a word and you can feel the disbelief and rage when Simmons implies she may have missed.
  • Church: Caboose, I know you're there. I'm leaving this message from two thousand years in the past. Whatever you do, don't, touch, anything. Apparently you're this culture's version of the apocalypse. You're going to destroy this building, and somehow bring about doom for their entire race.
Caboose: Mmmmmmnooo... that doesn't sound like me. I like people. And buildings also.
  • Time for some actual time travel or at least a simulation. But I do love Butch Flowers, haha. Whose greatest enemy is apathy! Love watching Church just make his own life worse. Also love the bit about Sheila having been made in Mexico.
  • "Man... First I kill myself, then I realise I'm a honkin' dork. Not a very good day to be me."
  • Church: I learned a very valuable lesson in my travels, Tucker. No matter how bad things might seem-
    Caboose: They could be worse.
Church: Nope, no matter how bad they seem, they can't be any better, and they can't be any worse, because that's the way things fucking are, and you better get used to it Nancy. Quit yer bitching.
  • Grif and Simmons and Sarge talking about the Blues, and Simmons saying he's not looking for friends and doesn't like his current crop AKA he just accidentally admitted Grif is his friend. Grif just didn't realize it.
  • Between the warthog and monkeying about discussions, Church and Grif really are on the same wavelength.
  • I love the scheming versus plotting conversation.
  • Ugh, the arrival of Andy. I hate him so much.
  • Haha, Simmons lying about his math skills is great.
  • Uuuugh, Andy. :/ Freckles is SUCH a step up as Caboose's AI murder buddy.
  • "Do we really have to seize destiny? Can't we just invite it to join our online circle of friends?"
  • I love Lopez's little rebellion-- he might be under O'Malley's control, but he's also going to sabotage O'Malley as much as possible. And tricking O'Malley into insulting himself in Spanish.
  • I really forgot that Tex straight up tried to steal Tucker's sword.
  • Military law is very clear in regard to the "not it" methodology for making decisions. Sorry, Donut.
  • I forgot that Donut can speak Spanish. In fairness, so did the show.
  • Hello, Crunchbite!
Next up, the PSAs!

Some of these have aged poorly... Like, uh, jokes about 2004 politics do not land well in 2020. And uh jokes about colds and flus. ...Okay, the Christmas PSA where Church destroys the Reds' Christmas tree, tells Caboose the truth about Santa Claus, gives everyone knock-off coal, convinces Church that Santa is now wearing blue and working only for the Blues, and scams Tucker out of a $350 gift is pretty funny though.

I enjoyed Burnie playing himself in the outtakes by putting words he can't pronounce in his own script. And Grif singing Happy Birthday to Church in prison. Also poor Geoff being told to adlib and immediately having Grif start to tell Church "You're looking buff, man, have you been working--" and being immediately booed by everyone, and someone says they'll use it for an outtake and Geoff is like "It's funny! And I didn't even get to finish!" And everyone trying to figure out Tucker's sword and him accidentally killing everyone in various outtakes. And in the deleted scenes Tex keeps making fun of O'Malley's plans to rule the universe, haha. Also the deleted scene that's just another Simmons' self-insert fanfiction, just as a video instead of a fake game in the Fan Guide.

It also gave us character profiles! I'm sure a lot of this has since been contradicted in canon, but interesting that we got specific hometowns for a few people: Donut in Leggatt Plains, Iowa, which doesn't seem to be a real place; Moscow, Iowa for Sarge, which actually does; Tucker's from Detroit, and Delta Commune for Doc. Oh, is this where we get Caboose grew up on the moon, with his hometown being labeled as Low G Colony, Moon? And hey, I always had him be a middle child, I like that this one did too. Tex likes money and scars and dislikes Donut. Okay I know that's definitely not real, but the idea of Allison growing up in an orphanage hurts me a little. Okay, and I know for sure that Simmons would die of happiness at the fact that Sarge's likes are battles, fringe science, and Simmons. Lopez likes oil and unions, and hates capitalism. My kind of guy. Last but not least, I actually really like Simmons as the son of a bunch of right-hand stooges (who probably wanted power for themselves).

Simmons backstory
cinaed: This fic was supposed to be short (Default)
Well I’d meant to do my season two rewatch Saturday but was sick most of the weekend. But now I’m feeling well enough to watch and enjoy!
  • Aw, I forgot that the first scene of the season is Doc’s introduction.
  • Church being so done with Caboose and Tucker, and the combination of O'Malley and Caboose means that his threats involve giving Church a birthday present (sure it’s Tucker’s head, but you know).
  • Just imagining Doc’s expression as the Blues explain that Church is a ghost and now a ghost in a robot makes me laugh. Also another thing is that the Blues apparently have a Spanish-English dictionary, which somehow the Reds never bothered to get for years. Sorry, Lopez!
  • I love that Church actually knows military lingo and it’s Tucker and Caboose who are like “???” whenever he tries to be smart in earlier seasons. Also Tucker just being like “Nope, I like my blood on the inside.”
  • God, I forgot that Church went “I can’t pronounce Frank, we’re calling you Doc.” Like..Frank? At least protesting over DuFresne makes a little more sense! Church really does love to mess with people. Also Doc’s speech about the differences between being a medic and a doctor remains iconic. “Well, a doctor cures people. A medic just makes them more comfortable.. while they die.”
  • I also forgot that Church just straight shoots Caboose (and actually hit him!) so Doc will go over and help him. Stone cold. “I can’t believe he shot me!” “Oh, don’t even START Caboose!”
  • Also love that the Reds have staff meetings, which Grif presumably sleeps through. Though why they all even trusted Grif to carry ammo around, I just don’t know.
  • And the beginning of the iconic surrender exchanges. Cake, flags (wait no flags), Lopez. Doc turning into a fake hostage. “You don’t get anything except humiliation and ridicule!” “We’ve already got that! What else do you have?”
  • I forgot that Doc immediately assesses the Red Team, realizes Grif is the least popular of the group, and immediately starts insulting him to curry favor. Speaking of stone cold, like dang, Doc.
  • Another iconic scene is Church ragging on Tucker as he wiggles his switch. :D And of course Sarge’s amazing code is “drive.” He’s definitely that guy whose password is Password1235.
  • Fun parallels with Donut’s “I’m so freaking lost” and Doc’s “Help, this Jeep is kidnapping me!"
  • Lopez is like a son to Sarge! Sarge loves him so much that he forgives him for turning against him and murdering him. Also Sarge thinking he can fight a machine gun.
  • Tucker: "You hardly ever used your legs before anyway. I’ve never heard of a grown man asking for so many piggy-back rides.” Church: “Hey, I already told you: that was for science.” And thus canonical piggyback rides were established.
  • Bold of Simmons to call someone else Poindexter.
  • Everyone thinking Church is shy because he can’t turn around.
  • Grif using Doc’s words against him, and thus a low-key dislike of each other was born.
  • Poor Doc. Stuck wandering the wilderness aka the 60 feet or however much space there is between the bases.
  • Simmons and Grif squabbling like an old married couple trying to tell the story about the Blues and Doc.
  • I am usually against love triangles, but the Lopez/Sheila and Sheila/Caboose is so good.
  • Caboose having a good idea, except they didn’t consider that Lopez would immediately escape.
  • Ah, the old days when Lopez actually believed in the Red Team. Also will always love “Primary objectives: 1. Fix everything. 2. Hate the orange one. 3. Call mom more often.” Lopez calling Sarge father! And then his brutal disillusionment as the Reds almost kill him.
  • Simmons loves that machine gun.
  • Lopez/Sheila is such a good ship. Love their meet-cute. Of course then Tex steals his body. Also Sheila being into Lopez AND Tex. I’d forgotten about that.
  • “Tucker, there’s a very fine line between not listening and not caring. I like to think that I walk that line every day of my life."
  • Love Tex just rolling with "Sure, I’m a ghost.” And now we’re finally into the O'Malley plot which is so much fun.
  • Sarge’s been wanting to get a cyborg on his team for this whole dang war. He’s so happy when Simmons becomes a cyborg. Meanwhile Grif and Simmons are united in hating the idea.
  • Tex telling embarrassing stories about Leonard’s high school years. :D And the beginning of this very weird plan to rescue Caboose from O'Malley. And seeing the inside of people’s heads. Or at least Caboose’s head, which means a stupid Tucker and a Church who is even more foul-mouthed than Church himself plus he’s Caboose’s very best friend. Sarge the southern pirate. Donut the girl. Grif’s yellow armor.
  • Grif sounds almost impressed when he does the 1-2-3 count that he pulled on Simmons and realizes that Donut beat him at his own game. Unfortunately then he promptly gets run over by Sheila.
  • “Suck it, Blue!"
  • I honestly love Lopez’s love song to Sheila. He’s such a romantic.
  • Church is such a nerd. His insults are so bad.
  • And the beginning of Doc and O'Malley’s saga begins. Their juxtaposition is amazing.
  • And the beginning of cyborg Simmons! I still love that even if Simmons instantly insults Grif, the fact remains that he went through surgery to save Grif’s life. And he sounds genuinely worried when Grif starts coughing, right up until the point he figures out Grif is using his brand new replacement lungs to smoke. And Simmons trying to get Grif to eat healthy and stop smoking. Good luck with that, Simmons…
  • Simmons apparently likes to dance, if his fury over the assumed cancelled holiday party is any indication. That’s a prompt for someone!
  • Donut and Tucker are both the romantics of their team because Tucker thinks Sheila/Lopez is sweet, he just doesn’t want to deal with love triangle bullshit.
  • Meanwhile Lopez and Sheila go on strike for machine rights and I for one support them wholeheartedly.
  • Double O Donut! I love Donut and Grif’s misadventures together.
  • Tucker: "Sheila and Lopez are now considering leaving to form their own robot army. They said no one would dare oppose them.” Church: “What?! Did you try to talk them out of it?” Tucker: “No way, I wouldn’t dare oppose them!”
  • Poor Donut. He has no sense of direction. And poor Doc, stuck with O'Malley for company.
  • Sarge talking about the entertainment value of being tortured. Sarge…what…. I’m not gonna kinkshame, but I’m definitely gonna think about kinkshaming Sarge.
  • Donut and Caboose’s truth or dare scene is so cute. They’re such a fun dynamic. And I really wonder what Donut was gonna say about the Red Team plans until Church possesses him. And Church is immediately super chill in Donut’s head, and wants to just relax and do some arts and crafts. And Donut considers Caboose his friend! And Caboose really likes Private Biscuit.
  • Church trying to bargain for two robots so he can have Tex back is sweet right in the middle of a ridiculous scene. And Donut being so excited for a sleepover with the Blues.
  • I’m just saying, Sarge would make an excellent car salesman the way he’s messing with the Blues over these robots. And Donut must be rubbing off on him, heh, because “I’ve been told my lube jobs are fantastic!” is definitely a Donut line.
  • Church using military lingo in one episode and then a handful later not understanding military time is such a Church thing.
  • Finally to the iconic Tucker line of Grif and Simmons. “It’s just the same two guys bickering like an old married couple. I’ve only been listening for like five minutes and I can already tell they’re really in love. Why can’t they see it?” And Church doesn’t even bother to argue.
  • Tucker discovering Red vs Blue is a lie is still amazing. As in the ironic discussion, which I will always love.
  • Donut’s sarcasm when he realizes they’re leaving him and Sheila behind to guard each base. Man versus tank. Should go well for him.
  • And set up for season three, which has some of my favorite team ups– Sarge and Caboose, Grif and Church. That’ll also be a fun rewatch.

Time for the bonus features aka Outtakes, PSAs, and deleted scenes!

Honestly most of the PSAs this season weren’t great, but the Fourth of July fireworks safety one did make me laugh. And it does have Donut with his Kiss the Cook apron!

Outtakes were okay, with the running theme of Burnie trying to explain adlibbing to everyone else, haha. Also “Great Caesar’s Dressing!” is as catchy as “Great Caesar’s Ghost!” And the outtake of Sarge being Hamlet. And Tarzan. And the Grif and Simmons audition tape was fun.

Deleted scenes! Doc and Vic having some weird chemistry. Calling Doc hot and saying he missed him. And Doc complaining that no one likes him and that someone stole his wallet. Of course then Vic immediately gets mean. The others include Sarge and Grif prepping Simmons for cyborg surgery before Grif gets hurt and they actually go through with it, which mostly includes getting Simmons super drunk.  Sounds about right for Blood Gulch!

cinaed: This fic was supposed to be short (Default)
I discovered that I own the first eight seasons of Red vs Blue, so I’m going a slow rewatch! One season each weekend, of course starting with the first one, and also watching any bonus features. It should be fun!

  • The theme song playing “Living like this, we’re already dead” over Church’s image sure is a hell of a thing.
  • Look, I am a simple soul. I will always love that first “Do you ever wonder why we’re here?” and “…Wanna talk about it?” and all the others that follow it, and I love how it sets up Grif and Simmons’ dynamic instantly.
  • “I’m no stranger to sarcasm, sir."
  • Ah, shotgun. One of the most important laws of society, at least according to the Reds.
  • Love the Puma versus Warthog debate and Church and Grif being on the same wavelength.
  • Simmons: "Hey, that’s not exactly what happened.” Grif: “Yes it is. You said, ‘I’m not going to the Vegas Quadrant!’ and then the next thing I know you’re in an escape pod headed for–” And thus a bunch of conspiracy theories were born.
  • Love Simmons’ terrible attempt at imitating Sarge.
  • Season 1 Caboose and Donut are so weird. Definitely the two whose personalities have changed the most over the series.
  • “You know what? I could blow up the whole goddamn world with this thing.” I love Church so much.
  • Aww, forgot that Simmons was worried about sending Donut on the wild goose chase.
  • Ah, that first enraged Church screech. Also iconic. Other iconic things in season one: Church being a terrible shot, the automatic conclusion to anything weird being time travel, the six pedal problem, Tucker never getting the sniper rifle, Church possessing people and being terrible at impressions, the “Hrk!!!” sound, the Tucker did it excuse, Donut being from Iowa.
  • Both Tucker and Church being clueless about driving the tank.
  • “He’s sneaking around the side of the base.” “He must be one smart son of a bitch.” “Aw, man, I am SO lost.” The whole Donut with the flag and the Blue Team teleporter stuff continues to be hilarious.
  • SHEILA! SHEILA, I MISS YOU. :(
  • “I just want you to know…I always hated you, I always hated you the most.”
  • Sarge leaves for like five minutes and everything gets weird.
  • TEX. I MISS YOU.
  • I love ghost!Church and his ridiculous dramatics. And everyone just rolling with it.
  • Grif guessing that the Warthog cost twenty-five dollars has the opposite energy of Lucille Bluth asking how much a banana could cost.
  • Forgot about Tex using Caboose as target practice. Or Tucker trying to bond with Tex.
  • Simmons immediately trying to get Donut medevaced.
  • “I like me.” I love Caboose so much.
  • Love the half-truths Church remembers about Tex. And Caboose’s understanding of it. Sadly I am not wearing my 'gay robot’ shirt today, but I was wearing it yesterday.
  • Grif and Simmons bickering over pronunciation. And laughing at each other’s jokes.
  • In retrospect, Tex just going “Sure, okay” when Church tells her he’s a ghost is both hilarious and sad.
  • Church trying to scam Sarge out of money and pretending to be an angel is always going to be one of my favorite scenes of the whole show. Church laughing at his own jokes. Also apparently Sheila and Church hang out in the weird space when they’re not possessing people. Who’s written that fanfic?
  • The Red Team doing their “we hate each other– oh no, don’t die, that’s not cool, come on, stay with us” stuff already in season one. They’re a dysfunctional family already!
  • Donut’s pink armor! I missed it for the first half of the season.
  • Grif thinking Lopez was just a very sullen and quiet guy the entire time.
  • Church’s outrage that the Blues just left his body on the cliff and Tucker’s “All we’ve got are rifles and pistols! What do you want me to do, shoot you a grave?"
  • …I really forgot that Church went to snitch on Tex and totally betrayed the Blues to try and keep her in Blood Gulch a while longer.
  • Simmons manning the gun on the Warthog is pretty badass, or would be if Tex didn’t immediately blow them up.
  • Dexter "I understand the need to safeguard your masculinity” Grif. Dude. Buddy. Pal. Please…safeguard it a little less.
  • Donut’s amazing grenade throw is still impressive. He definitely played football in high school. Or at least had the football coach begging him to join. One or the other.
  • The ending of the season on O'Malley. Aw, there’s another villain I miss.

From the outtakes, I don’t know who this guy Sarge was describing is, but wow the whole thing is very gay. Maybe it’s Master Chief. Did Sarge hook up with Master Chief? (I don’t play Halo, I don’t know.) Someone in chat suggested Locus/Sarge and now I have been laughing but also into the idea since Saturday (Sarge's sexuality is soldiers) so you know.... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

“Back at Fort Huachuca we were preparing to lead an invasion against the forces of the Plutons, I spied him across the way and I could tell he was a commanding figure. Oh, he stood nearly seven foot, six feet tall. He had dark brown skin and, uh, chocolaty flowy hair that was the kind of thing that would make a man giggle to himself in the night. I can’t say everything I learned from him, but I can tell you this: I’m glad I learned it. Even if it does give me nightmares."

Favorite season one PSA definitely goes to the Tattoos one where Grif has a Blade tattoo.

Although a spin-off, Carolina: The Teenage Witch featured a host of original characters, with the occasional guest star and name drop from its parent show, and rare crossover episode. It also took a more serious tone, focusing on the half-mortal witch and mortal discrimination and the corruption within the Witches Council.

He wipes some of the icing off and grimly picks the confetti out of it, noticing, even more grimly, that the confetti is shaped like hearts.

“Surprise!” Donut says, beaming from ear to ear. “Wash and I are dating!”

Wash and Donut have a very important announcement. Not everyone takes it in stride.

It’s a joke, Donut knows, though Wash sounds sincere rather than his usual deadpan. It still makes his stupid heart flutter, thinking that Wash might like even his most annoying trait. He ignores the feeling with the ease of practice. It isn’t Wash’s fault that Donut gets a crush on any guy who’s a little nice to him.

Series: Part 2 of Days of Donut
Summary:

Grif knows exactly how this will play out-- over too fast, vaguely disappointing, one of those quickies that’s only good in that you got off and not much more. Still, Donut’s boredom is infectious, and it’s a more appealing thought than just staring at a quiet Blue Base for the next few hours. And Donut might actually shut up during sex, which would make the whole thing worth it. Also, Grif really doesn’t want to die of blue balls.

He shrugs. “Sure.”

--

Grif and Donut figure out a way to liven up their watch duty.

Summary:

Donut looks like a cross between a football quarterback and a model. He’s got thick, wavy hair, broad shoulders, a jaw like it’s been carved from marble, and a pouting mouth half-lost under a beard. If there was a girl around, she’d probably call Donut hot, like unfairly hot, like holy fuck hot.

There’s just Simmons though, who makes a startled wheezing sound, trying to remember how to breathe.

--

Simmons is bad at decisions but excellent at denial.

Summary:

It's probably weird that an episode of a show where the titular character is only present in a voice-over is so good, but this episode is great. Grif and Simmons get a visit from a Council middleman, and between one visit in the present and one in the past, we see how much has changed for the two in just a year. Though we could've done without experiencing that eye-searing yellow zoot suit.
