Z. ZZZ-Snatcher (last book that kept you up WAY late)

(I did this meme on Tumblr and already answered K, M, T, U, V, and Y.)

Kinds of Books You Won’t Read:

Uh….I don’t read most modern lit, especially not ones I suspect are written by white male authors with manic pixie dream girl obsessions. I also don’t read horror because I’m a wuss.

Major Book Hangover Because Of:

Hmm, I am not sure what this one means? Like, is it the last time I felt hungover because I got too deep into a book that it hurt to come back to reality, because in that case, the latest one would be Tom Reiss’s The Black Count.
If it’s the last time I devoured a book series over the course of a weekend/a few days, drunk on prose and world-building, then, hm. Probably when I had my Sutcliff binge this summer and read all the Sutcliff novels I could get my hands on!

Three Of Your All-Time Favorite Books:

(Les Miserables is a given, right? Right.)
  • Regeneration by Pat Baker
  • Eight Days of Luke by Diana Wynne Jones
  • Dealing With Dragons by Patricia Wrede (with the caveat that I no longer buy any of her new books because of race issue stuff)

Unapologetic Fangirl For:

Rod Albright Alien Adventures, the entire quartet, by Bruce Coville. No, I don’t care that it’s aimed at children ages 8-12, or that the prose is pretty basic, I LOVE THIS SERIES and will always be convinced Snout and Grakker are married and that Elisabeth grows up to join the Galactic Patrol as well, and that Madame Ping is the best ever.

Very Excited For This Release More Than Any Other:

The Islands of Chaldea by Diana Wynne Jones and completed by her sister Ursula Jones after her death. A whole new DWJ book, guys! A NEW ONE.

Your Latest Book Purchase:

Well, I purchased a bunch of books in one go after discovering a gift card in my desk drawer, haha, so:

  • After the Revolution: Antoine-Jean Gros, Painting and Propaganda under Napoleon by David O’Brien
  • The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte Cristo by Tom Reiss
  • The Other Mozart: The Life of the Famous Chevalier de Saint-George by Hugh Brewster
  • The Hundred Days: Napoleon’s Last Campaign from eye-witness accounts by Antony Brett-James
  • The Chevalier de Saint-Georges: Virtuoso of the Sword and Bow by Gabriel Banat

cinaed: Tough times don't last, tough people do, remember? (Gregory Peck)
(Yes, I am alive. At some point I will do a post about work and getting ready for grad school and Otakon and whatnot, but today I'd rather do a meme.)

NPR's Top 100 SFF Books list is out. The meme is to bold if you've read the book/series, italicize ones you fully intend to read, underline if it's a series you've read part but not all of.

cinaed: I can whistle through my fingers, bulldog a steer, light a fire with two sticks, shoot a pistol with fair accuracy (Ann Sheridan)
As seen on all over LJ, the AO3 meme, where you post a list of your 10 most read fics on AO3 and then talk about them!

1. Here Thy Hands Let Fall the Gather'd Flower (Greek mythology, Hades/Persephone, 2209 hits, 81 kudos)
2. The Aftermath Job (Leverage gen, 587 hits)
3. Once a Goddess (Chrestomanci gen, 451 hits, 35 kudos)
4. Hat Trick (Glee/High School Musical, Kurt/Ryan, 358 hits, 10 kudos)
5. A Memory That Wasn't Ours to Claim (Hot Fuzz/Good Omens, Aziraphale/Crowley, Danny/Nicholas, 338 hits, 8 kudos)
6. Such Delight As Prisoned Birds Must Find in Freedom (Pat Barker's Regeneration gen, 331 hits)
7. Bright Lights, Big City (Glee/High School Musical, Kurt/Ryan, 289 hits, 4 kudos)
8. Where Sister and Brother and God-kin Know Us (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood gen, 276 hits, 1 kudo)
9. Outnumbered Like the Alamo (Stargate Atlantis, John/Rodney, Elizabeth/Radek, 254 hits)
10. The World Was All Playthings (Stargate Atlantis, John/Ronon, 242 hits, 7 kudos)

I am...honestly not very surprised by this list! *laughs*

-Numbers 1, 3, and 6 were written for Yuletide
-4, 7, and 10 were written for the two more recent Porn Battles
-2 and 5 were written for ficathons
-9 is my only McKay/Sheppard

The one nice surprise is my Fullmetal Alchemist fic, because it's about Scar and also gen, which I don't know is particularly popular in FMA fandom? But Where Sister and Brother and God-kin Know Us is one of my favorite fics, so I'm glad to see it in the top 10!
cinaed: Hollywood is a place where they'll pay you a thousand dollars for a kiss and fifty cents for your soul (Marilyn Monroe)

January

"There's an owl trying to get into the house! And it's carrying a letter."

Barney blinked at his mom, trying to figure out if she was having a good trip or a bad one (probably good, because she didn't seem alarmed, just confused). "Okay, Mom," he said, humoring her. "I'll go get the broom and shoo it away."

Then James came skidding into the room, eyes ridiculously wide. "Barney, there's an owl trying to get into our house!"

Barney stared for a moment, and then shrugged and went to get the broom anyway.

"I could make you stay," Jack says.

Daniel just pauses in his packing and looks at him. It's the same argument they've had a dozen times or so since Daniel announced that he would be joining the expedition, and while Daniel knows exactly how this conversation will go, it's wearying nonetheless. "You could," he agrees, because it's true. One or two conversations with the right people and Daniel would be back at the SGC, figuring out what to do about the few Goa'uld that survived the Replicators and settling for dreams of Atlantis and all its wonders. "But you won't."

"Hey, I looked good in that make-up."

Sokka says it as a joke, because he's Sokka and humor comes to him as naturally as breathing. (Sometimes, even more naturally.) Somehow the joke twists and contorts into something else the second the words leave his lips, though, because Suki's expression tightens, her eyes darkening.

As To Matters of Dress

August

It is said that in the beginning, there were no deserts.

Rather, there were oceans and land with all manner of greenery, so that the land itself was an ocean of trees.

It came to pass that Ishvala stood upon his world to look at what he had created. His holiness scorched the earth, burned the trees and plants away until there was only sand instead, warm and golden. There, in that great expanse of desert, he created the first people, gave them skin the color of sand and taught them language and the knowledge of how to survive in this holiest of places.

They called themselves Ishvalans after their creator, and were content.

Where Sister and Brother and God-kin Know Us

September

The first time Parker kisses Sophie, it’s an impulse born of adrenaline. They have just done a job that involved all of Parker’s favorite things-- stealing a lot of money, getting some really bad guys, and diving off a building-- and there is a warm, light feeling in her chest that Parker has learned recently to define as happiness.

Standing in the Sky

October

Around Gracia, everyone danced.

Elicia went past, her delighted giggles filling the air as Officer Falman carefully waltzed her around the floor. A petal, caught in her hair from when she'd scattered the roses, fluttered to the floor as Gracia watched.

Hello, Young Lovers

November

The glass is cold against Riza's skin; droplets of condensation bead her fingertips even after she sets the drink down. She has been drinking steadily for the past hour, enough downed shots to lower her defenses, but not enough to forget that this line of thinking is dangerous.

cinaed: This fic was supposed to be short (Default)
I figured I'd do this meme, post a sentence or two from your WIPs to try and get yourself in the mood to finish them. Especially since the majority of these stories have been languishing on my computer for a year or so. ^^;;

Dust You Know By Name (Star Trek: Reboot, Amanda/Sarek)

In Arizona, [Amanda] spent most of her time outside with one of her father's precious books in her lap, her gaze devouring its words and the landscape around her, committing it all to memory. She felt like she was one of those alien flowers that needed only the sun to bloom, soaking up the heat as the sun warmed her neck, shoulders, bare feet. The Arizona sun freckled her unblemished skin and earned scoldings from her father and warnings from her mother about her health.

Amanda had inherited her father's ability to charm and persuade as well as her mother's analytical mind and interest in nature and the unknown, but she had also inherited her father's love for literature. With the sun warm against her skin, she read first modern literature and then the classics: Plato, Kempe, Shakespeare, Wilde, Cather, Wheatley, Tolstoy, Woolf, Heimirsson, Nejem. She read her father's copy of Catcher in the Rye so many times that her father finally took it away from her, saying she would crack the spine from overuse, and gave her an electronic version of it instead. (He smiled sympathetically when she argued that it wasn't the same without the weight of the book in her lap, but didn't let her have the book back.)

Where the Sea is Sharpest (Stargate: Atlantis gen)

Ronon grew up on the outskirts of the capital city, where the wind whispered through the tall golden-green grains in the fields and knocked gently against the window of his bedroom. At night, after his mother had tucked him and his brothers into bed, he would creep to the window and open it, let in the night's scent of nearby greenery and sometimes smoke from a bonfire or someone else's chimney. Most nights he fell asleep to the plaintive cries of the black-winged langris as they called out for love and companionship, the calls following him into his dreams and giving him wings.

When he stood on the balcony of his quarters in the City of the Ancestors, all he could smell and hear was the sea, the taste of salt filling up the back of his throat and making his eyes sting. Back on Sateda, in a city that was only ashes now, he would have had to travel three days in any direction to reach the sea. One of the strangest things about being on Atlantis (out of the many strange and wondrous things) was the fact that the city is itself an island.

Another Bargain (Nero Wolfe/Madelyn Mack crossover, Archie/Madelyn, Madelyn/Nora)

I figure I would have met Madelyn Mack eventually, when it comes right down to it. Not that our meeting was fate or anything sappy like that, but when you're working for Nero Wolfe, you're bound to run into other detectives from time to time, whether they're horning in on your cases or coming to Wolfe for advice.

Of course, it happens that I met Madelyn Mack first, but the point stands.

Amid the Thieves and Outlaws of the Land (Life, Charlie/Ted)

A flash of red caught his attention, and he lifted his head from where he’d been studying the dust beneath his shoes. He’d heard of people having red hair, but this guy’s hair looked practically on fire, it was such a bright, striking color. It was almost ridiculous, like maybe it wasn’t a real hair color and the guy had just dyed it to make a statement.

Ted couldn’t help but stare. The guy stood out like a-- well, like a redheaded stepchild, though he wasn’t sure if that term was really applicable here. A sore thumb. The guy stuck out like a sore thumb.

I am in a crossover mood. Like, right now, the current thought percolating in my head is a PotC/Temeraire crossover, where the Black Pearl is a dragon Sparrow stole, having not thought things through, or maybe he was planning on selling the egg to the highest bidder when it hatched on his ship. Turns out it's much harder to hide a dragon than a ship when you're on the run from the British Navy. ;)

Anyways, here's the deal.

If you want to, comment here with something like "1, 6, 7, and 9 form a superhero team. What would their super powers be and who would be in charge?" I have a list of 15 characters ready and waiting to be written in a crossover drabble.

(Last time I did this meme, it managed to turn up the awesome prompt of Alec Hardison/Penelope Garcia.)

Go to your icons page in Livejournal and look at the first two icons (the one on the right and the one on the left). Pair up the characters in the two icons. Go to the next two and do the same until you have a list of ships. Then...well, write 'em.

(I'm using my LJ icons for the meme, since, uh, my Dreamwidth one would just involve a lot of classic actors RPS.)

TV! )

*eyes list and laughs* I guess folks can tell what my favorite type of TV show is!

Also, I have gotten my friends into Life and The Magnificent Seven, and to celebrate I am going to go post my two Life fics and one Magnificent Seven fic on AO3. It figures that the only fanfic I've written for a TV series about seven men is...a femslash story. *laughs*

Give me a character or a pairing, and I will write you a one-sentence fic in each of the following genres: Angst, AU, Crack!Fic, Crossover, First Time, Fluff, Humor, Hurt/Comfort, Smut, UST.

Fandoms: The Closer, CSI, HIMYM, Leverage, Stargate, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
cinaed: Superstitions are habits rather than beliefs. (Marlene Dietrich)
Give me two characters from different fandoms you know I'm familiar with, and I'll give you a dialogue happening between the two of them. Without justifying how the crossover would work, how their worlds clashed, or how they could even meet each other. Just a silly crossover conversation with no backstory, for fun.

My fandoms are: SGA, SG-1, HIMYM, The Office US, CSI: Las Vegas, Psych, The Closer, Better Off Ted, Life, and House.

Barney Stinson and John Sheppard (includes Barney/Robin UST) for [livejournal.com profile] museseeker

I am throwing myself at original stuff and trying to write, and it's making my brain hurt. So I now have a list of 15 characters from varying fandoms.

Uh, just offering one or two of my favorite lines from some of my current WIPs because I feel like it. ;)

The Ship of Fools

Daniel returns to Atlantis with a dead man's dust in his mouth, Marshall Sumner's blood drying on his hands, and the image of those awakened Wraith seared forever into his memory.

Surround Me With Songs of Deliverance

Cam catches sight of Qetesh's face, the thin nose, pale mouth, dark eyes, and finds himself thinking of Cleopatra, who was said not to be particularly beautiful but nevertheless held first Julius Caesar's and then Antony's heart in her hand.

here is the deepest secret nobody knows

The first thing he notices is that his head feels full of holes.

You're an Alias

Madison darted inside, clutching her bag of books to her chest and chattering away about how Mr. Aiden had done the story time and that she was never going to give a mouse a cookie, ever.
