"There's an owl trying to get into the house! And it's carrying a letter."
Barney blinked at his mom, trying to figure out if she was having a good trip or a bad one (probably good, because she didn't seem alarmed, just confused). "Okay, Mom," he said, humoring her. "I'll go get the broom and shoo it away."
Then James came skidding into the room, eyes ridiculously wide. "Barney, there's an owl trying to get into our house!"
Barney stared for a moment, and then shrugged and went to get the broom anyway.

"I could make you stay," Jack says.
Daniel just pauses in his packing and looks at him. It's the same argument they've had a dozen times or so since Daniel announced that he would be joining the expedition, and while Daniel knows exactly how this conversation will go, it's wearying nonetheless. "You could," he agrees, because it's true. One or two conversations with the right people and Daniel would be back at the SGC, figuring out what to do about the few Goa'uld that survived the Replicators and settling for dreams of Atlantis and all its wonders. "But you won't."

Sokka says it as a joke, because he's Sokka and humor comes to him as naturally as breathing. (Sometimes, even more naturally.) Somehow the joke twists and contorts into something else the second the words leave his lips, though, because Suki's expression tightens, her eyes darkening.

It is said that in the beginning, there were no deserts.
Rather, there were oceans and land with all manner of greenery, so that the land itself was an ocean of trees.
It came to pass that Ishvala stood upon his world to look at what he had created. His holiness scorched the earth, burned the trees and plants away until there was only sand instead, warm and golden. There, in that great expanse of desert, he created the first people, gave them skin the color of sand and taught them language and the knowledge of how to survive in this holiest of places.
They called themselves Ishvalans after their creator, and were content.

The first time Parker kisses Sophie, it’s an impulse born of adrenaline. They have just done a job that involved all of Parker’s favorite things-- stealing a lot of money, getting some really bad guys, and diving off a building-- and there is a warm, light feeling in her chest that Parker has learned recently to define as happiness.

Elicia went past, her delighted giggles filling the air as Officer Falman carefully waltzed her around the floor. A petal, caught in her hair from when she'd scattered the roses, fluttered to the floor as Gracia watched.

The glass is cold against Riza's skin; droplets of condensation bead her fingertips even after she sets the drink down. She has been drinking steadily for the past hour, enough downed shots to lower her defenses, but not enough to forget that this line of thinking is dangerous.
