Romeo and Juliet

cinaedI know the poem sucks. I just needed to vent.
"Romeo and Juliet"
// On Hearing of the Double-Suicide of Two Teenagers //
The past is gone now, and the future as well.
All of your youthful glory has become blood and the smell of gun smoke.
When your mothers cradled your bawling forms at birth,
they did not image a fate like this—
They dreamed of bright-eyed children on the first day of school,
of what seemed a thousand caps flying into the air and shouts of joy from the graduates,
of a white wedding and golden rings.
Not sprawled forms on the deck of a patio, uncaring and crumpled like broken dolls.
They did not image this.
What delighted mother would, when the doctor turned and said, “Congratulations”?
All of them loved you, their cherished son, their cherished daughter.
They wanted you to grow up and live life to the fullest—
but you only treasured your forbidden love for each other.
Two bullets to still your wildly beating hearts—
A stupid fate for the two of you.
Just as stupid as Romeo and Juliet,
Young lovers that we talk about in English as being together forever in death.
We call them our tragic heroes and praise them for their cold corpses.
But death is absolute and no one knows what truly lies beyond.
You have leapt into the darkness hand in hand,
But you cannot know what lies ahead and if you’ll truly be together.
Did you think you two would be placed among the stars,
spoken in awe about as teenagers hid away and stole kisses from their lovers?
You are disgraced, poor deluded fools, spoken of with mingled pity and hatred.
The past is gone now, and your future as well.
All of what you once had is now the smoke that clings to your funeral garbs
and the red-black stains on the patio that will never go away.

There, done ranting. I wasn't really upset about it until my English teacher had the audacity to say to our class, "Oh, every girl in this room has thought about committing suicide and most of the boys have too."
Bullshit. Okay, I'll admit it, I've sometimes wanted the whole world to go away and just let me be alone. But that didn't involve me fantasizing about taking a bunch of pills and falling into a death-filled sleep! Stupid ass.... I hate my teacher so much. He can't stereotype girls or guys as suicidal emotional idiots!
*tries to calm down*
Anyway, the two kids who committed suicide were from a rival high school in our county. The girl was 15, the boy 19. The parents had forbidden them to be together and so they killed themselves. The girl's mother found them on the patio.
Suicide isn't the answer. It's the coward's way out. We need to stop going on and on about Romeo and Juliet's deaths being the symbol of love when they were both just young stupid fools who got themselves dead. It's not romantic--it's a tragedy. Get it straight.
Anyway, school's decent. I have writer's block but what else is new. I'm outlining an idea for a manga. Even if I can't draw, maybe I can find a Japanese exchange student in college to collabortate with me. ^_^
Anyways, I've done my rant for the day. Okay, my rants for the day. I hope everyone had a better day than me, lol.

Date: 2005-01-08 04:09 pm (UTC)Though, to be fair, Romeo had been exiled and would've been killed if people knew he'd come back to be with Juliet, which is a far cry from someone's parents now disapproving and saying, "You can't go out with so-and-so."
And, well, I have lots of issues with Romeo and Juliet, mostly because they're young and basically in love with each other because they're both pretty, and so they don't really think things through so much.

Date: 2005-01-11 02:48 am (UTC)And it was really just a rant. I hate Romeo and Juliet because I wanted to slash Benvolio and Merceutio and...well, we all know what happened to Mercutio because of Romeo being a dumbass.... Which left poor Benvolio alone and sad.
And I also really liked Juliet's other suitor that Romeo murdered at Juliet's crypt. His name escapes me but he was the sweetest thing even if he was older than Juliet by several years.
