Cook in his Garrett series writes a tongue-in-cheek detective almost noirish story set in a fantasy world with elves, trolls and etc. The humans have been involved in a long war which is coming to an end -- and silver is of course the mystical metal du jour. I find it very funny. His other series the Black Company is very different -- gritty and dark.
